We’re making history in Brighton with this brand-new night shelter

We’re so proud that Stonewall Housing is working on a brand-new LGBTQ+ night shelter in Brighton, with our friends from The Outside Project and Switchboard.

After opening its doors on January 23, this referral-only shelter is running ten beds. It’s based in a secure location in Brighton and will run for ten weeks as an exciting pilot project.

The shelter is by and for LGBTQ+ people aged 18+ who are experiencing homelessness, feeling unsafe in their living environment, sofa surfing or using apps to find places to sleep.

Open between 19:00 and 09:30, the shelter is staffed overnight. It provides comfortable beds, communal spaces, hot meals and showering facilities, as well as on-site access to LGBTQ+ housing advocates, domestic violence workers, and many other targeted support services for LGBTQ+ people.

Led by the charity Switchboard with funding from The Rainbow Fund, the shelter is a partnership with The Outside Project and Stonewall Housing.

To refer into this service, please fill in our referral form, call our advice line on 0800 6 404 404, or email referrals@stonewallhousing.org

Referral criteria:

  • LGBTQ+ people aged 18+ who are sofa surfing/escaping domestic, discriminatory, or hate violence/first time street homeless/already in homelessness support services/insecurely or unsafely housed
  • Low risk for substance abuse/violence/self-harm and suicide
  • Lower support needs for mental health/physical/learning disability (e.g. not those who would require a carer with them)
  • Either engaging with services already or wishing to engage in services if required
  • No dependents who will also need to be in emergency accommodation
  • We welcome referrals of LGBTQ+ people with no recourse to public funds.

“Frequently homeless LGBTQ+ people have great difficulty finding shelters that accept and respect them. That’s why we’re so proud to be partnering with Switchboard and The Outside Project on this brand-new Brighton night shelter”.
