This winter, we are spotlighting our “Kicked Out for Coming Out” campaign to shed light on the harsh reality faced by many LGBTQ+ individuals who are forced out of their homes simply for being who they are.
The campaign is underscored by findings from our latest Impact Report. Between April 2023 and March 2024, we supported 3,202 LGBTQ+ individuals who were homeless or at risk of homelessness, marking a 33% increase from the 2,405 individuals supported in the previous year. This alarming rise underscores the growing demand for specialised support and the critical need for greater awareness and inclusivity among mainstream housing providers.
Rejection at the Root of Housing Instability
Our report highlights familial rejection as the leading cause of housing instability for Stonewall Housing’s service users. Rejection – whether rooted in societal prejudice, cultural or religious beliefs, fear of stigma, or a lack of understanding about LGBTQ+ identities – has devastating consequences. For those affected, the loss of a home often signals the start of a precarious journey through instability and vulnerability.
Why Winter is Especially Dangerous
Winter amplifies the dangers of homelessness, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals. For many, this season is not just the coldest but also the loneliest time of the year.
- Support networks fade: As others return to family homes for the holidays, LGBTQ+ individuals often find themselves without a place to turn.
- Reduced access to critical services: Many support organisations reduce hours or close altogether during the festive period, leaving those in need with fewer options.
- Mental health impacts: The isolation and stigma of being without a home during the holiday season can profoundly affect mental health, making it harder to live authentically and seek help.
