LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge

The LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge Scheme

What is the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge?

The LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge, by HouseProud and delivered by Stonewall Housing, is a free-of-charge scheme that all social housing providers can sign up to. It asks them to demonstrate their commitment to LGBTQ+ resident equality and support. It was engineered to work flexibly for all social housing providers, regardless of their size and geographical location.

With our 42-year history of proudly supporting LGBTQ+ people to access safe housing across the UK, we are delighted that Stonewall Housing has joined forces with HouseProud to become the delivery partner for the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge.

Are you interested in signing up to the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge scheme?

A staff member or resident of a housing provider (such as a housing association, ALMO, or local authority) can express interest in signing up to the pledge.

We will then provide you with everything you need to know about what it involves.

To express an interest, or simply to find out more about the Pledge Scheme, please email our team at HouseProudPledge@stonewallhousing.org

Pledge Sponsors

To ensure that the scheme can grow from strength to strength and continue to impact the lives of LGBTQ+ residents, we launched a sponsorship partnership. By sponsoring this initiative, these ten organisations are leading LGBTQ+ inclusion across the entire housing sector in the UK. Interested in becoming a Sponsor? Please email houseproudpledge@stonewallhousing.org.

Background of the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge – where it all began

HouseProud was set up in 2014 as a network for LGBTQ+ people working in social housing.  HouseProud is comprised of numerous organisations, including housing associations, ALMOs, local authorities and care providers.  The key aims are to provide networking opportunities for LGBTQ+ staff members and to campaign on / for LGBTQ+ related issues.

In 2017 HouseProud commissioned the University of Surrey to undertake research on the experiences of LGBTQ+ social housing residents and published the report No Place Like Home? in February 2018.  The Pledge Scheme was developed in response to the report.

The LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge (previously the HouseProud Pledge) was developed by HouseProud and the University of Surrey in association with residents, staff members and sector leaders from across the country and was launched in May 2019 with endorsement by the Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development, London.

It addresses the issues raised by the findings of the No Place Like Home? report and is a scheme that all social housing providers can sign up to, to demonstrate their commitment to LGBTQ+ resident equality and support.

A knowledge exchange project, “Housing with Pride” has tracked the progress and learning of the first Pledge Scheme signatories through workshops with staff which lead to the development of a promotional animation video to raise awareness about the need for housing providers to be supportive and inclusive of LGBTQ+ residents’ lives.

Following a review of the Pledge Scheme in 2021 and feedback from HouseProud members it was agreed that a delivery partner organisation would be sought to work with HouseProud to deliver the Pledge Scheme and to ensure its continued growth and success.

In December 2022 after a thorough selection process Stonewall Housing became the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge delivery partner. An event to celebrate the new partnership was held in March 2023.
