Jaz*, a 18-year-old trans man, was outed without consent and left homeless overnight
This young person had been cautiously exploring his gender identity with close friends while navigating a difficult home environment. When a friend accidentally disclosed his identity to his parents, they confronted him that evening, saying they “didn’t want a daughter who wanted to be a boy.” He was told to leave immediately.
He was denied access to most of his belongings, including essential items like his school uniform and college materials. His sudden homelessness, combined with previous transphobic abuse at school, pushed him into a state of deep distress, including suicidal thoughts.
Stonewall Housing intervention:
- Issued a safeguarding alert and put a trauma-informed safety plan in place with daily wellbeing check-ins.
- Facilitated access to a trans-affirming mental health service, where he received specialist counselling.
- Advocated with the local authority to ensure he was recognised under the homelessness duty for young people at risk.
- Worked with his school to update records to his correct name and pronouns and ensure he had pastoral support and protection from further bullying.
He is now in safe accommodation, attending school regularly and receiving ongoing therapeutic support.
