Amira* (she/her), 34, was evicted after coming out to her landlord
Amira had rented the same flat for a decade. After building what she felt was a friendly rapport with her landlord, she mentioned in passing that she was bisexual. Everything changed almost immediately.
Her landlord began making derogatory comments about her sexuality, suggesting she was “confused” and “too old for all that.” Uncomfortable but hoping it would pass, Amira tried to ignore it. Weeks later, she received a sudden eviction notice citing “property refurbishment”, despite seeing no work planned or advertised.
Amira, who already struggled with isolation, experienced spiralling anxiety. The stress triggered a return to alcohol dependency, and she feared she would soon be homeless.
Stonewall Housing intervention:
- Advocated to the local council to ensure the eviction was recognised as discriminatory.
- Referred Amira to an alcohol support programme and an LGBTQ+ wellbeing group to rebuild her confidence and community.
- Supported her application to secure safe, supported housing for LGBTQ+ adults.
Amira is now housed, stable, and connected with a supportive community, but she still speaks of the fear of losing everything “just for being honest.”
